What is CTS?

 Social studies of science and technology, or studies on science, technology and society (CTS), constitute a field of work in the fields of academic research, education and public policy. CTS originates three decades ago from new currents of research in philosophy and sociology of science, and an increase in social and institutional sensitivity on the need for a democratic regulation of scientific and technological change. In this field we try to understand the social aspects of the scientific-technological phenomenon, both in terms of its social determinants and in terms of its social and environmental consequences.

The general approach is interdisciplinary, concurring in the disciplines of social science and academic research in the Humanities such as philosophy and the history of science and technology, sociology of scientific knowledge, the theory of the education and the economics of technical change. Today CTS defines a well-established field institutionally in universities, educational institutions and public administrations of many industrialized countries.


Social objectives of CTS


 CTS tries to promote scientific literacy, showing science as a human activity of great social importance. It is part of the general culture in modern democratic societies. CTS tries to stimulate or consolidate in young people the vocation for the study of science and technology, as well as independence of judgment and a sense of critical responsibility. CTS seeks to foster the development and consolidation of democratic attitudes and practices on issues of social importance related to technological innovation or environmental intervention. CTS promotes the commitment to the social integration of women and minorities, as well as the stimulus for an environmentally friendly and equitable socioeconomic development in relation to future generations. CTS tries to help to bridge the growing gap between humanist culture and the scientific-technological culture that fractures our societies.


The public of CTS.


 Researchers in social sciences and Humanities, universities or research centres, with basic training in philosophy, sociology, economics or history of science or technology. Secondary school teachers, teaching or institutional responsibilities in teaching science or curricular organization. Pupils in secondary education, and in the different specializations of higher education, including undergraduate and postgraduate in Humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering. Scientific journalists and receiver general public communication of science through the media. Program managers and science and technology policies.

How does science technology and society related 


Science and technology is the best thing society could ever ask for. Since the industrial revolution in the 18th century science has been in progress. Some sectors that have been boosted by science and technology are energy, physical sciences, information and communication. The society has greatly gained with the invention of technology.

Infrastructure in the society has grown with the help of science and technology. Modes of transport like electronic railway lines were realized and these actually benefited the society by offering them a better means of transport. In the past, almost everything was analog but thanks to the science and technology we are now being digitalized by the day. The invention of the telephone and radio services has broadened human communication.

MODERN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND THE CHALLENGES OF THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES


We live in a highly sophisticated world where everything is almost achievable. There would probably have been no changes between the world of today and that of three centuries ago if necessity and serendipitous discoveries had not driven men to achieve great things. Science and technology have had huge positive effects on every society. The world today has gone digital, even human thought. Our world has been reduced to a global village and is better for it.

The benefits of science and technology far outweigh every perceived shortcoming. Some of the biggest effects of technology are in the area of communication; through the internet and mobile phones. There is advancement of communication and expansions of economic commerce. Today we hear of information and communication technology (ICT). Any institution worth its name must have it in place to be really outstanding. Information technology has become boosted in today's generation; from the field of communication, business, education, and down to the entertainment industry. Through information technology, work performances are boosted with less effort and greater productivity by using various operations.

Without computers or the internet, it will be difficult for people all over the world to get their questions answered. One may use the internet to locate a wealth of information with which to answer an essay question that may have been assigned at school, communicate with people, conduct transactions, access news, buy and advertise goods. The list is endless.

Science and Society essays

Society's image of science and scientists as well as the public's misunderstanding and often fascination with science clearly demonstrate the influence science and society have on each other. Certain stereotypical images created by the media and instilled in the public's minds have surrounded scientists for years. These images influence the way people think about science as well as the way scientists think about themselves and others. Science has also separated itself from the general population when it comes to knowledge. The common individual knows very little about science as compared to scientists. This has a tremendous impact on the way the public views and respects science. This "gap" in understanding also influences the way scientists work and act. The film, The Man in the White Suit, directed by Alexander Mackendrick, and the book Making Science out Own: Public Images of Science 1910-1955, by Marcel LaFollette, both demonstrate the relationship between science and society.
